CYNTHIA MCKINNEY AND ROSA CLEMENTE GREEN PARTY CANDIDATES
2008
It took only one round of votes to elect Cynthia McKinney the 2008 Presidential Candidate of the Green Party. On July 12 in Chicago, Green Party members gathered from around the world to celebrate this historic event and welcome Cynthia’s vice presidential running mate, Rosa Clemente. This is the first time in American history that two women of color have run for the highest offices in our country – an opportunity to inspire and activate not only those who have fought for years for truth, justice, and accountability in government, but also an opportunity to awaken and inspire those who have felt disempowered and given up on electoral politics altogether.

Imminently qualified, Cynthia McKinney has fought for social and environmental justice her entire life. Since her childhood when she rode on her father’s shoulders during the Civil Rights movement and throughout her six terms in the House of Representatives as the first African-American woman to be elected to Congress in the state of Georgia, Cynthia has fearlessly confronted the powers of oppression. During her time in Congress, she authored legislation for a real living wage, to eliminate subsidies to corporations that export jobs to the global south, to repeal the Military Tribunals Act, to eliminate depleted uranium, to protect and restore our national forests, and to impeach George Bush, Dick Cheney, and Condoleeza Rice.
Rosa Clemente, a journalist and leader in the burgeoning hip hop culture, earned her Master’s Degree from Cornell University and is a highly skilled organizer in a position to motivate the disenfranchised to take up their place in American politics. Her goals include reform of our increasingly unjust judicial system, bringing our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan, and using our money and resources to develop solutions to poverty, climate change, health care, and education.
Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente stand on the values of the Green Party, values shared not by Greens alone, but by the vast majority of Americans. As the Green Party presidential and vice presidential candidates, they provide us the opportunity for our voices to be heard, to return power to the people.
